How To Log Tracebacks in Cisco IOS

In the event that Cisco IOS is malfunctioning without logging any tracebacks that may help in troublshooting the root cause, use the following undocumented Cisco internal engineering commands:
  • Router#conf t
  • Router(config)# service log backtrace
  • Router(config)# end

This hidden command will log tracebacks for every IOS action executed.

Be sure to disable this feature afterwards as it is CPU intensive and may flood your logs with Cisco IOS routine hexadecimal addresses and tracebacks messages - which may look unnecessarily alarming.
To disable it:

  • Router#conf t
  • Router(config)# no service log backtrace
  • Router(config)# end
