Certifications introduced for Cisco Mobility Specialists


Cisco has introduced new Service Provider Mobility Specialist certifications and updates to its Cisco Certified Internetwork Engineer (CCIE) Service Provider written and lab exams.

The new Cisco mobility certifications are the following:


  • Cisco Service Provider Mobility UMTS to LTE Specialist certification: This certification endorses a service provider network engineer has the knowledge and skills needed to understand components, technologies and architectures found in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) packet core networks, as well as migration from UMTS to LTE evolved packet system.
  • Cisco Service Provider Mobility CDMA to LTE Specialist certification: This certification authenticates a service provider engineer network's knowledge and skills for understanding components, technologies and architectures found in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and LTE packet core networks, as well as migration from CDMA to LTE evolved packet system.


Cisco also announced that key attributes from the CCNA-CCNP-CCIE Service Provider certifications will be integrated into the CCNA-CCNP-CCIE Service Provider (Network Engineer) certifications.

CCNA-CCNP-CCIE Service Provider Operations certifications will officially retire on Jan. 31, 2015, Cisco said.

As for the exam updates, Cisco said the CCIE Service Provider v4.0 exams will be available May 22, 2015. The exams will emphasize conceptual design technologies, implementation and troubleshooting, and focus less on specific hardware platform knowledge.

The format for the lab exam is now composed of three modules -- Troubleshoot, Diagnostic and Configuration -- and will be delivered using a 100% virtual or software-based platform to better simulate a Service Provider backbone environment.

The written exam number will now be 400-201 in accordance to the new prefix exam numbering structure.

VMware calls future NSX certifications the 'next-gen CCIE'


VMware says future NSX certifications establish the beginning of a network virtualization career path for network and server pros alike.

VMware announced a new network virtualization career path, which includes three certifications focused on the design and implementation of NSX.

The first certification, titled the VMware Certified Professional - Network Virtualization certification, offers a basic look at installing, configuring and administering NSX. It is currently available to the general public. However, current CCIEs are able to skip the introductory course and move on to higher level course work if they choose.

The company's VMware Certified Implementation Expert (VCIX-NV) and the VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX-NV) courses will be open to the general public in October 2014. A beta group of 39 professionals have already received their VCDX certification, which is the highest NSX cert available.

VMware hopes to establish the beginning of a new career path that is very similar in structure to Cisco's CCNA and CCIE administrator-to-expert model. In fact, VMware director of networking and security Chris McCain calls the VCIX the "next-gen CCIE."

The company is also designing a publically available fast-track course on "inter-networking" of virtual and physical infrastructure, "which is basically NSX on Cisco," said Chris McCain, VMware Director of Networking and Security.

"We're not blind to the fact that Cisco owns a large share in physical networking. We have an overwhelming amount of folks -- customers and partners -- who want to ensure they understand that these two products work well together," McCain said.

Network pros need SDN training, not CCIE status


Network pros will need to look further than traditional vendor certifications if they want to build and manage SDN and programmable infrastructure.

The Cisco certification ladder is no longer a foolproof career path.

In fact, career-level networking certifications from most hardware vendors don't offer the SDN and programming skills that network engineers will inevitably need, according to a group of experts who spoke on a certs panel at Interop NYC last week.

Instead of plodding through every level of a vendor certification program, engineers should take the lower-level classes for networking basics, and then chart their own course in learning programming and management for automated, software-driven networks.

"You have to fundamentally understand how to route packets and use protocols to use equipment," said Lori MacVittie, principal technical evangelist at F5 Networks. "But things are changing and it's going to be more important to understand APIs and the tool sets around them, than it is to know how to interact with particular devices."

Network engineers are changing from "consumers of network technology to creators of network technology" as they move away from using CLI and GUI for proprietary, static infrastructure, said Colin McNamara, chief cloud architect at Nexus IS, a Dimension Data company. Now that networks are being abstracted and virtualized, engineers will need programming skills and the ability to interact with SDN controllers and orchestration systems to provision networking resources as an integrated part of IT, he said.

As networking becomes an integrated part of IT resource provisioning, it's no longer feasible for network vendors to train engineers to solely specialize in their technology, McNamara explained.

Meanwhile, it could be years before hardware vendors like Cisco include network programmability concepts even for their own systems in career-level certification programs, said Wendell Odom, a CCIE, longtime Cisco Press author and well-known certifications expert.

Best Computer Forensics Certifications for 2014


Computer forensics is one of the more challenging IT disciplines, and certified professionals remain in high demand. Yet computer forensic certifications remain something of a "wild" frontier. From two dozen available credentials, we list the five best options for 2014.

Today, there are a number of high-quality certification programs that focus on digital investigations and computer forensics. However, there are also certifications and programs in this area that are far less transparent, well-documented and widely known.

What's creating this demand for new programs in computer forensics? Consider the following:
  • Computer crime continues to be a major growth area. As more cyber crimes get reported, more investigations and qualified investigators are needed. This is good news for law enforcement and private investigators who specialize in computer forensics.
  • There's a high demand for qualified computer forensics professionals as nearly every police department is in need of a trained candidate with suitable credentials.
  • IT professionals interested in working for the federal government (either as full-time employees or private contractors) must meet certain minimum training standards in information security.Computer forensics qualifies as part of the mix needed to meet such requirements, which further adds to the demand for certified computer forensics professionals.

As a result, there is a continuing rise of companies that offer computer forensic training and certifications, many of which are "private label" credentials that are not well recognized. Making sense of all the options and finding the certification that's right for you might be more difficult than it seems.
A recent survey we conducted for SearchSecurity.com (June 2013) on available information security certifications turned up just under two dozen computer forensics and anti-hacking credentials.And these are all somewhat well-known, and on the up-and-up. But in pulling those materials together, we deliberately ignored programs that didn't publish the sizes of their certified populations or that are associated with mandatory high-dollar training. (A small certified population usually means the program is just getting started or not doing very well. We generally look for programs with no fewer than 5,000 certified professionals, by contrast. Expensive training sometimes indicates there's a strong profit or financial motive in signing people up for certification.)
After a closer analysis of all of the available programs out there, we've identified the five best computer forensics certifications for 2014.
Certified Computer Examiner (CCE)

The Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) comes from the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners, aka ISFCE.
It is well-recognized in the industry and in the law enforcement community as a leading credential for computer forensics professionals. Private-sector holders usually include security officers and managers, IT administrators or managers, security or forensics consultants, systems and data security analysts and investigators, and even some lawyers and HR managers. Law enforcement holders usually serve as forensic investigators, analysts, or technicians, and conduct official investigations to research or prosecute computer crimes.
The certification process for the CCE includes both a proctored online multiple-choice exam and hands-on forensic analysis of a floppy or CD-R optical disk. When the online exam is completed, applicants conduct a thorough forensic examination of the test media with which they are supplied. Together, both written and hands-on portions are intended to verify a candidate’s skills and knowledge in the area of computer forensics.
The CCE training classes usually run for 5 days in the classroom (or 40 hours of online or self-paced materials). Instructor-led versions generally cost $2,500 to $3,500 in North America, and are highly regarded. Online or self-paced versions may be somewhat less expensive but don’t always deliver direct instructor contact.

Certified Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI)

The International Council of E-Commerce Consultants, aka EC-Council, is a well-known training and certification organization that specializes in the areas of anti-hacking, computer forensics, and penetration testing.
The Certified Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) certification emphasizes forensics tools, analytical techniques, and procedures involved in obtaining, maintaining, and presenting computer forensic evidence and data in a court of law. EC-Council offers training for this credential but permits candidates to challenge the exam without taking the course, though payment of a non-refundable $100 application fee is required.
The CHFI course runs for 5 days and covers a wide range of topics and tools (a detailed course description is available). Topics include a comprehensive cyber-crime overview, in-depth coverage of the computer forensics investigation process, search and seizure of computers, working with digital evidence, incident handling and first responder procedures, gathering volatile and non-volatile data from a Windows computer, recovering deleted files and partitions from Windows, Macintosh, and Linux systems, using AccessData FTK and Encase Steganography, password cracking, log capturing tools and techniques, investigating network traffic, wireless attacks, Web attacks, and e-mail crimes. Courseware is available, as well as instructor-led classroom training.
EC-Council also offers numerous other related certifications of potential value to readers interested in the CHFI. These include the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), EC-Council Certified Security Analyst (ECSA), EC-Council Certified Incident Handler (ECIH), and Licensed Penetration Tester (LPT). Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE)

The International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists (IACIS) is the organization behind the Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE) credential. This organization caters primarily to law enforcement personnel (and you must be employed in law enforcement to qualify for regular IACIS membership), but the organization also offers associate membership to retired law enforcement personnel and to full-time contractors to law-enforcement organizations.
A formal application form, along with an application fee, is necessary to join IACIS. Those who are not current or former government or law enforcement employees or are not forensic contractors to a government agency can apply for Associate Membership to IACIS, provided they can pass a background check.
Earning the CFCE requires passing a two-step testing process that includes a Peer Review and CFCE certification testing. Peer Review consists of accepting and completing assigned problems based on core knowledge and skills areas for the credential. These must be solved, and presented to a mentor for initial evaluation (and assistance, where needed) before being presented for peer review. Upon successful conclusion of peer review, candidates must work independently to analyze and report upon a forensic image of a hard drive provided to them. Following specific instructions, a written report is prepared to document the candidate’s activities and findings.
Once that report is accepted and passed, the process concludes with a written examination. A passing score of 80 percent or better is required for both the forensic report and the written exam to earn the CFCE.
Despite the time and expense involved in earning a CFCE, this credential enjoys high value and excellent name recognition in the computer forensics field. Many forensics professionals consider the CFCE to be a necessary "merit badge" to earn, especially for those who work in or for law enforcement.

GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA)

SANS is the organization behind the Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) programs, and is a well-respected and highly regarded player in the information security field in general. SANS not only teaches and researches in this area, it also provides breaking news, operates a security alert service, and serves on all kinds of government, research, and academic information security task forces, working groups, and industry organizations.
The organization's forensics credentials include the intermediate-level GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA) and the more senior GIAC Certified Forensic Examiner (GCFE). Neither credential requires taking SANS courses (which enjoy a strong reputation as among the best in the information security community, with high-powered instructors to match) but they are recommended to candidates, and often offered before, during, or after SANS conferences held around the USA at regular intervals.
Both GCFA and GCFE focus on computer forensics in the context of investigation and incident response, and thus also focus on the skills and knowledge need to collect and analyze data from Windows and Linux computer systems in the course of such activities. Candidates must possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and ability to conduct formal incident investigations and advanced incident handling, including dealing with internal and external data breaches, intrusions, and advanced persistent threats, understanding anti-forensic techniques, and building and documenting advanced digital forensic cases.
The SANS GIAC program encompasses more than 60 information security certifications across a broad range of topics and disciplines. IT professionals interested in information security in general, as well as computer forensics in particular, would be well advised to investigate further at the GIAC home page.

Professional Certified Investigator (PCI)

The parent organization for Professional Certified Investigator (PCI), the senior level computer investigations and forensics credential is known as ASIS International.
Founded in 1955, with more than 38,000 members world-wide, the former American Society for Industrial Security (now known simply as ASIS International) is one of the oldest and best-known information security bodies around. The PCI's primary focus is on investigations and includes coverage of case management, investigative techniques and procedures, along with case presentation.
ASIS adopted a book called The Professional Investigator’s Manual as its sole information source for this exam.
The PCI exam devotes 29% of its coverage to case management (analyze for ethical conflicts, analyze and assess case elements and strategies, determine and develop strategy through review of procedural options, manage and implement necessary investigative resources), 50% to investigative techniques and procedures (electronic and physical surveillance, interviews and interrogations, collect and preserve objects and data, research by physical and electronic means, collect and report relevant information, use computers and digital media to gather information and evidence, and more), and 21% on case presentation (prepare report to substantiate investigative findings, and prepare and present testimony). This is the only credential in this article that really teaches people how to analyze and present information for expert reports and testimony.
For practiced or aspiring computer forensics professionals who wish to work on legal cases involving their expertise, especially if they wish to appear in depositions or at trial, the PCI is THE absolute credential to have. It makes sure holders are ready to withstand the rigors of the legal system, and present themselves and their evidence with best results in the courtroom.

Beyond the top 5 computer forensics certifications listed in this article, there are lots of other certification programs that can help to further the careers of IT professionals who work in computer forensics. 
In particular, credentials from Access Data (Access Data Certified Examiner: ACE) and EnCase(EnCase Certified Examiner: EnCE) are worth pursuing for those who already use (or plan to use) the forensics toolsets and platforms available from those vendors. Access is well known for its FTK Forensic Toolkit, which enjoys considerable use in law enforcement and private research and consulting firms. The same goes for the EnCase Guidance software, which is also very widely used in the field as well.
And if you look around online, you'll find numerous other forensics hardware and software vendors that offer certifications and plenty of other organizations that didn't make the cut for the 2014 list of the best computer forensics certifications. But before you wander outside the items already mentioned in this article, you might want to research the sponsoring organization's history, the number of people who've earned its credentials, and determine whether or not the sponsor not only requires training but stands to profit from its purchase.
You might also want to discuss with a practicing computer forensics professional as a final check, to ask them if (a) they've heard of your other candidate and (b) if so, what they think of their offerings.
If you do your homework, you won't get burned. Certified computer forensics professionals are sure to remain in high demand for 2014 and beyond.

The Project Management Institute (www.pmi.org) not only stands behind the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, it works with academia and training companies to ensure proper coverage and currency in the various curricula that exist to support this and other PMI credentials (the PMP's precursor, the CAPM cert, is covered in the next section in this article, in fact).
That's why you can obtain college- and university-based PMP training from so many institutions, and also why you may sometimes find PMP coverage integrated into some degree programs (often at the Master's Degree level).
The PMP credential is coveted by employers seeking the most highly skilled project managementprofessionals. Developed by project managers, the PMP certification is the highest level credential offered by PMI. The certificationl is designed to ensure that credential holders possess the skills and qualifications necessary to successfully manage all phases of a project, including initiating, planning, scheduling, controlling and monitoring, and closing the project.
PMP certified projects managers are also well versed and skilled in managing all aspects of the triple constraints -- time, cost, and scope. Employers depend on the skills PMP professionals to manage budgets, track costs, manage scope creep, and identify how changes to the triple constraints may introduce risk into the project and minimize such risk to protect the project investment.
The standards for PMP certification are rigorous. In addition to passing a comprehensive and exhaustive exam, credential holders must first demonstrate and certify that they possess the skills and education necessary to succeed in the project management field. Credential seekers should be prepared to provide documentation regarding items such as education, projects worked on, and hours spent in each of the five project management stages -- initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing the project.
While difficult to achieve, the rewards for PMP credential holders can be significant. According to the PMI Salary Survey (seventh edition), PMPs earn an average of 16% more than their non-credentialed counterparts, with the median salary of project managers in the United States at $105,000.
The PMP remains a nonpareil certification for IT and other professionals whose responsibilities encompass project management. It is the standard against which all other project management credentials are judged in today's marketplace.

The same organization that stands behind the PMP also backs the CAPM (Certified Associate In Project Management) certification, and it is properly considered a stepping-stone credential for those who wish to attain PMP status by stages, rather than in a single step.
That's why the PMI describes the CAPM as a "valuable entry-level certification for project practitioners" that is "designed for those with little or no project experience."
In fact, thePMP requires 3-5 years of documented on-the-job project management experience, depending on the educational background of each applicant; the CAPM requires only a high school diploma and either 1,500 hours of documented on-the-job experience (about 9 months of full-time work) or 23 hours of project management classroom training prior to taking the exam. Nor does the CAPM require continuing education (which the PMI calls PDUs, short for professional development units) as does the PMP (60 PDUs every three years) to maintain this credential. CAPM holders must re-take the exam once every five years.
The CAPM certification is one of a number of entry-level project management certifications (including the CompTIA Project+ mentioned next in this article) that IT professionals interested in project management might choose to pursue. Remember, though, that it is a stepping-stone to the PMP.
Unless you work in large organization where aproject management teamis in place that includes junior- as well as more senior-level project management positions, the CAPM by itself is unlikely to provide a ticket to a project management job (though it doesn't hurt for IT professionals for whom project management is a part-time job role, or who seek to grow into full-time project management).

CompTIA Project+

ComTIA's Project+ is another entry-level project management credential, roughly on par with the PMI's CAPM. Instead of emerging from a leading, focused industry trade organization whose sole focus is project management and related activities, Project+ comes from a computing industry-spanning organization that puts its credentials together based on input from industry players, representatives from government, academia, research institutions, subject matter experts, and other interested parties who must pay to participate in credential design (training companies, publishers, and so forth).
Does this make the Project+ inferior to the CAPM? Good question! Because the Project + preceded the CAPM, I'm inclined to treat PMI's decision to introduce the CAPM (in 2004) as a tacit endorsement of the Project+ concept (originally named IT Project+ when it was first introduced in 1999). Because the leading project management organization needs to compete with this credential, that indicates a valuable market slice worth contesting.
Project+ fills more or less the same niche that the CAPM does. The biggest differences (and they have their pros and cons) between the CAPM and the Project+ is the experience and background requirement. The CAPM cert requires a high school diploma plus either 1,500 hours of on-the-job project management experience or 23 hours of classroom training in project management. The Project+ certification on the other hand, makes no such stipulations. While this makes the Project+ easier to obtain, it's also possible to argue that it's less valuable or meaningful.
That said, Project+ functions as a workable stepping stone to the PMP, just as the CAPM does. Our gut feel is that either certification functions about the same on the way to the PMP, with the CAPM earning a slight edge thanks to its more stringent requirements. A quick survey of job listing sites confirms that more mention CAPM by name than Project+.

Master Project Manager (MPM)
The Master Project Manager (MPM) certification comes from the American Academy of Project Management (AAPM), a rival organization to the PMP.
The AAPM positions itself as a "board certification," a type of professional licensure modeled after credentialing for pilots, ship captains, and engineers, all of whom must assume legal responsibility for passengers or users under specific sets of conditions. The credentialing process depends on a board review of a candidate's resume and documented experience. Those who don't meet the requirement for three years of documented on-the-job experience in the field can qualify on the basis of holding a degree from an AAPM-approved academic program, taking AAPM-approved training classes for MPM preparation, or passing the MPM exam.
The AAPM was founded in 1996 (the PMI got its start 12 years earlier, in 1984). Like the PMI, theAAPM also has strong roots in academia and research institutions (see their Accreditation Standards for more information). It currently supports over 50,000 certified members (the PMI has a certified population more than ten times that size) with a global presence in over 150 countries (the PMI claims 185).
Beyond the competitive jostling that appears naturally between these organizations, the PMP and AAPM do have slightly different charters and focus. Where the PMP aims directly at full-time, professional project managers, the AAPM's MPM (and the rest of the AAPM credentials) also includebusiness and technical management functions in their purview.
But a quick comparison of MPM vs. PMP mentions on job posting web sites, shows that the PMP enjoys a considerable advantage in numbers over the MPM. That said, the MPM is less expensive than the PMP and does not impose as many continuing education requirements, either.
The MPM probably makes most sense for IT professionals who've earned a degree from an AAPM approved institution, or who have low-cost/no-cost access to MPM training materials through company training programs or contracts with third-party training companies. Otherwise, it looks like the PMP outweighs and outclasses this credential.

An online exam (20 questions, 55 minutes) is available. Candidates with three years project management experience and accredited education who pass the exam with a 65 percent or higher score may apply for the credential.

Certified Project Manager (CPM)
The Certified Project Manager (CPM) certification is a mid-tier certification from the International Association of Project and Program Management, or IAPPM.
IAPPM was founded in 2003, and takes as its charter development of learning and skills in the areas of business analysis, project and program management, and (task or activity) portfolio management. Its goal is to promote professional project management to make sure resources such as time, money, and people are utilized effectively; to provide clear direction to project members (and organizational management); to adapt to changes, and to ensure quality deliverables with minimal risk. The other IAPPM credentials include an entry-level Certified Project Professional (CPP) and two senior-level certifications, the Certified Project Director (CPD) and the Certified International Project Auditor (CIPA).
Interestingly, the IAPPM Certification Framework is the work of the Hong Kong (China) chapter, which appears to set the tone and direction for the organization. It also clearly spells out each credential's eligibility requirements for academic background, project management experience, education, and submission of written work for peer review and approval.
The CPM requires the CPP (or equivalent knowledge, training, and experience) as a prerequisite and sits somewhere between the MPM and the PMP in terms of years of experience, number of hours involved in project management tasks, and so forth. Perhaps reflecting its offshore origins, the IAPPM certifications barely register on US job posting sites.
Though the CPM is interesting, it is best approached with caution, unless you work in the Pacific Rim where the credential is best known and recognized.

 Project management is such a white-hot area, you'll find it popping up all over the place. And there are other project management certifications available, for general IT project management as well as specific certifications for software development project management
Honorable mentions go to the Project Management in IT Security certifications offered by the EC-Council, best known for its Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) cert. You should also be aware of the Professional in Project Management and the Certified Project Director certifications offered by the Global Association for Quality Management (GAQM).
Most graduate business, management, and management information systems (MIS) programs offer project management training to students, and some offer certificate programs outside the aforementioned project management organizations as well. You'll also find training and the occasional certification around various project management toolsets as well (for example, Microsoft Learning offers numerous courses around its Microsoft Project product family, and you can find a dizzying array of project management packages on Wikipedia's "Comparison of project management software" page).
But when all is said and done, the CAPM and Project+ remain the best (and best-known) entry-level project management certifications, with the Project Management Professional (PMP)certification as the primary professional targetand capstone for would-be professional IT project managers (don't forget to look into PMI's other related certifications as well).
