Cloud service providers are production networks which contain public and private content. These are the newest type of production data center. They are different in that you have to pay to put things into them (as opposed to paying to get things out). Cloud providers give you the same type of dynamic data center scaling capability as the largest content companies in the world. Your content is virtualized and moved around in a “cloud.” Unlike other types of Content Data Centers, these will provide Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for your content. They have additional requirements for traffic separation and security that the public content providers do not offer. That is because they need to keep your content separate from everyone else’s.
Cloud providers offer a large range of services. They are known as the ‘aaS’ services, e.g. Platform, Infrastructure, Software – PaaS, IaaS, SaaS, etc. You choose the type of service you want, and they provide it—for a price. Internet Initiative Japan is an example of a service provider who offers both private and public cloud services.
MPLS is popular with this type of production network. It offers L2 scaling across multiple data centers (for virtualization) as well as secure access and traffic separation for security purposes.
Again, I’ll reiterate there is no “one size fits all” data center product set, but the important thing to note is that the architecture of the data center must evolve and scale to meet end-user demand.
